China Shows Little of the Deadly Tibet Flood to Its Own People

Video of the flash flood at Gyirong Port has travelled around the world, but not inside China.

CCTV cameras filmed a wall of water going through Gyirong Port, one of the main border crossings between Nepal and Tibet. Hundreds of people ran for their lives, and the video quickly spread on social media around the world.

But inside China the video is very hard to find, because the internet there is heavily censored. China's main state news programme has shown only one still picture from the video.

The flood happened on Wednesday. It has killed hundreds of people, and about the same number are still missing. Beijing has sent hundreds of emergency workers, and President Xi Jinping led an emergency meeting about the rescue work.

There are daily updates about the dead and the missing, and about a barrier lake that could overflow. But there are no stories from survivors in Tibet, and almost no videos from ordinary people.

Foreign journalists cannot travel to Tibet without permission from the government, so reporters must use state media. China says it is not violating Tibetans' rights and points to the money it has invested in the region.
