One story, three levels of English

Every story on English Newsroom is a real news event, reported by a named source and rewritten by our editors three times: for beginners (A1), elementary learners (A2) and intermediate learners (B1). You pick the level, and you can switch at any time — the facts stay the same, only the language changes.

LEVEL A1

Beginner (A1)

Short sentences and basic vocabulary. About ~500 words of vocabulary.

LEVEL A2

Elementary (A2)

More vocabulary and slightly longer sentences. About ~1,000 words of vocabulary.

LEVEL B1

Intermediate (B1)

Natural English with explanations for difficult words. About ~2,000 words of vocabulary.

Under each story you get the words to know with example sentences, a short grammar note, a three-question quiz and two discussion questions. Teachers: the same page works as a ready-made lesson — see news lessons for the classroom. Not sure where to start? Read how the levels work.
