65 Americans and 25 Canadians Missing After Nepal Flood

Hundreds of people are still missing after a flash flood and mudslide near the Nepal-Tibet border.

Dozens of Americans and Canadians are missing after a flash flood and a mudslide near the Nepal-Tibet border, Nepali authorities say. More than 350 people are known to have died.

The Nepal Tourism Board said on Thursday morning that 65 missing people are from the US and 25 are from Canada. State media in China, which controls Tibet, reported three dead and at least 558 missing there, including 260 foreign nationals. It is not clear if these numbers include the same people.

The US State Department said it knows that Americans were affected by Wednesday's floods, but it did not give numbers because of privacy. The US embassy in Nepal is working with local tour agencies and with the authorities to help affected Americans.

Canada's foreign office said it is watching the situation and is ready to help. It said 820 Canadians are registered as being in Nepal, but the numbers are only estimates because registration is voluntary.

The flood swept away whole communities. Roads and bridges worth more than 15bn Nepalese rupees (£72.18m, $98.33m) were damaged, a government official told BBC Nepali.
