Canada Answers US Tariffs With Taxes of Up to 50 Percent

New Canadian tariffs on nearly C$28bn of American goods will start on 8 September

Canada has announced new tariffs of up to 50% on many American products. The tariffs will apply to nearly C$28bn ($20bn; £15bn) of goods and will start on 8 September.

The list includes steel, furniture, fresh tuna, cotton T-shirts, honey, clothing, makeup and perfume. Other goods, such as dishwashers, washing machines, cheese and seafood, will have a 25% tax. Some tools and machines will have a 15% tax.

Canada acted because President Donald Trump put 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods last weekend, after trade talks between the two countries stopped on Friday.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said the US tariffs "will have real consequences for Canadian workers, businesses and communities". He said Canada's answer is "proportionate" and "strategic". The government is going to give an extra C$7.5bn to help workers and companies.

Canadian officials said they chose products that people and businesses in Canada can buy from other countries, so the new taxes hurt Canada less.
