Authorities close schools and businesses as the system brings destructive wind and rain.

A powerful storm made landfall in southern Japan early on Tuesday, bringing destructive wind gusts and heavy rainfall that forced schools and many businesses to close for the day.

Local authorities urged residents to stay indoors, warning that flooding and falling debris posed a serious risk in low-lying and coastal areas.

Emergency services said several flights had been cancelled and train services suspended as a precaution, though no major injuries had been reported by Tuesday evening.

Meteorologists expect the system to track northward through Wednesday, gradually losing strength as it moves away from the coast, but they warned that heavy rain could still cause localized flooding further inland.
